We saw this huge creature when we were in Nevada. It measured a fat inch and looked like a Bumble Bee.
Instead of rounded wings this one had very sharp pointy ones, rather wasp-like.
Does anyone know anything about this shimmering, buzzing Bee?

I do think this is a carpenter bee. They are big and shiny black. And the ones flying around gathering nectar and pollen are not able to sting. They are intimidating though and will fly right in front of your eyes. If it isn't that then I don't know what it is.

Don just looked at a carpenter bee image, as AL suggested, but the head was shiny, not hairy like yours. But then he looked at another image and the head was hairy, so. And they bore into wood, so Jel's guess of a woodbee also agrees. We have perfect drilled holes in our corncrib that have been drilled by them, he says. I just learned a lot.

I enlarged the photo and quickly pressed the back button - ugh and horrible is of course a comment on the creature not your photography.
I know enough now though not to harm such things although I wouldn't like to get too close - spiders on the other hand I quite adore.
I too don’t know what it is exactly. I tried to find out more through the internet and I would say that Abraham Lincoln was right when he said it was a carpenter bee.

Hi Photowannabe. It looks like a bumble bee without it's yellow stripes. Probably a mutant. They are usually fairly harmless and only sting if provoked.

We have quite a lot of these down here in Southern CA. I've also seen them out at the Colorado River around Yuma area.
So I think they're sort of deserty creatures. I do not like them, but they seem to like people -- and flowers.
Great blog as for me. I'd like to read a bit more about that topic.
