A trip back into my archives. When my husband and I were working trade shows in New York City we took every chance we could get to walk around the City. I found the fire escapes came in a variety of styles and colors. The buildings and their fire escapes just begged to be photographed, and so I did.
Be sure to enlarge the picture to see all the detail.

Nice shot! I've never had an apartment with one of those fire escapes, but when I was doing some apartment sitting I stayed in several places that had them. I was always a little nervous about opening the window & climbing out, though. I'm such a klutz I was afraid I'd accidentally drop something or knock something over and send it crashing to the sidewalk below.

Comparing those features are so interesting, even the style/shape of windows.
I am glad I live in a one floor house so dont need a fire escape.
Makes a great composition.
Nice shot. I think they add something to buildings and are as different as the buildings themselves.
I like it! How about a B&W version? Something kinda dark and gritty!
the burnt orange color of the fire escape and trim, paired with the plants, actually makes the place look somewhat quaint. i like this little captured corner of the city.
Hello Photowannabe!
Yes, fire escapes! what a great subject and object to photograph. The first time I visited the US(when I was 16!), I was so impressed by the outside stairs and felt relieved also in case there was something, I could escape!
Great picture and theme.
This is a great subject for photography. I think that perhaps its because fire escapes make such interesting patterns. More, more, Sue!
How interesting when enlarged! I wonder if anyone above has used the stairs to get down to that little bar and restaurant.
Love these New York shots. They tell a story...
while i was in the city i fell in love with them too.....and yes photographed them too :) ..the city has so much to capture on camera and memory , isn't it :)
I like the flower pots (or at least plant pots. Hey, a fire escape by any other name is a balcony.
Great photo!
If it weren't for the fire escapes and the flowers on them, this building would be plain and completely non descript. But with the railings and stairs and colors, it looks like home (or homes).
That's a great picture. Wonderful "F" post! Fun too.
I love fire escapes. When we were just in the city (San Francisco) I took a few pictures but none as nice as yours.
