IN SUTTER'S FORT

This weekend our family had a chance to visit Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, which is located in Sacramento, California.
John Sutter sailed from Germany around 1823 to the United States and eventually settled in California. Sutter was skilled in Indian affairs and helped the settlers on the West Coast. In the summer of 1840 John Sutter began building what would become an adobe fort. The walls were 2 1/2 feet thick and 15 to 18 feet high. There were quarters for his workers, a bakery, blanket faactory, blacksmith shop and other shops which enabled the fort to be self contained. A land grant was given to Sutter in 1841 by Mexian govenor Alvarado. Sutter became a Mexican citizen to qualify for his grant.
Many people used the fort as a waystation on their way to the gold fields, which Sutter was involved in the discovery of gold.
This was a fascinating tour of the Fort and reinactment of pioneer life in the 1850's.

Seeing those barrels made me wonder if Sutter's Home wines were a part of his legacy?

You added a great deal of history to accompany your interesting photo. Sutter certainly played a huge role in American history!!

Thats a terrific picture, I love the shadows on the barrels, and the colours on the metal bands. And a nice piece of history too.... you really get to visit some neat places.

Love learning the history and the like of the image, I will however comment on the photographic quality of the image.
The composition is great and the detail is also great. I might have use a flash to fill in some of the darker areas caused by shadows. Might have boosted the H&S in post processing too. All in all it is good but a few little touches will make it great. Thanks.

Neat shot and a great story to go with it. I love going to places like this. Just think of all the history that took place in those walls.
