While I was reading Carmi's blog about gnarled trees and bark, I remembered a photo I had taken a while ago . It was of an old gnarled tree trunk full of color and swirls, with a bit of vivid green moss thrown in for good measure.

Are you sure that's a tree trunk, and you didn't take all the leftover paint from your garage shelves and swirl it aound a bit just for fun???? Great colours and lots of detail, super pic.

Thanks for all your comments. This tree shot was done in Washington state at the Multnoma Falls lookout. Things are very damp there and this was in an old stand of trees. Sorry I don't know the species. It just yelled photo opp to me.

Now. This picture stunned me. I have seen lots of old knots, and old trees, and some driftwood that came all the way across the Pacific. But I have not seen anything compared to this. It is increadible.
I had a friend, a French Canadian, who lived on Vancouver Island and he used to walk the beaches there and pick up driftwood and loved the knots and gnarled pieces that has been in the ocean for years maybe. And he used them to make wood carvings. Some of the most incredible things I have ever seen he managed to coax out of wood from another time. It was amazing work. And your photograph reminded me of those days and that man and his wife and his little homestead on that special island.

I love all the color. I suspect it is due to all the moisture. I will try to get some shots of the old trees in this area. Very different.
