ABC WEDNESDAY LETTER " B "

A Pop Icon turns 50.

Welcome to ABC Wednesday and the letter " B ".
The letter " B " is for a bundle of Bubble Wrap on a blue background.
People have walked to the alter dressed in it, wrapped their packages and even made displays at art museums. Mostly, they like the sound it makes when they destroy it. Its the stress reducer disguised as package cushioning.
Did you know the the product once was envisioned as a new type of wallpaper?

Bubble Wrap on a black background.
Did you know that there are more than 250 pages on Facebook devoted to Bubble Wrap?
Bubble Wrap is made by a company called Sealed Air in the state of New Jersey.
Air is trapped between plastic sheets after they pass over several rollers, one of which creates the indentations for the bubbles.
Bubble
Wrap became an important cultural icon during the growth of computers. Something was needed to protect delicate components during shipping.
So Bubble Wrap, Happy Birthday. I'm glad you are 50 years old today, besides, I just love bursting your bubbles.
To see more "B" posts go to Mrs. Nesbitts link on my sidebar.
As always, enlarging the pictures will show more detail.

What a brilliant B! I never realised bubble wrap was already half a century old. I hope the person who invented it has been able to reap its riches...

Some almost/somewhat? timely trivia regarding your clever "B" choice: Yesterday (Tuesday) was Ellen DeGeneres' birthday. On the show, she reminded everyone that, last year, Amy Poehler gave her bubble wrap!

Oh my gosh! Did you happen to see Stephen Colbert do a skit about bubble wrap turning 50 last evening?
So funny.
He said the guy who invented it got the idea looking out his airplane window thinking about how the clouds looked buoyed by the airplane.

250 FB pages! Sheesh... lol

I love popping the things. And, although, they tend to be more bulky, I prefer bubble wrap over foam peanuts.

Very informative blog Sue! Thanks. I worked for a company here in Hamilton that was taken over by Sealed Air. Many people here like to pop those bubbles, but so far I have avoided the temptation. - Dave

Just home from a stressful day at work. Seeing your bubble wrap brought instant relief!

Ruth said...

Maybe someone else mentioned it in a comment, but I heard on the news that the inventor of bubble wrap was inspired by clouds while he was flying. And no, he wasn't a bird.

Shammickite said...

Isn't that amazing.... fifty years!!! I don't remember it being around for that long.

Laura said...

Oh, I heard this on NPR...I still remember the joy of bubble wrap when I was a little girl and my parents would get a package wrapped in the stuff. My brother and sisters and I would argue over who got to pop the bubbles first. So much fun!

Has it been that long! Wow, it is older than I am, and I am thankful for that:).
