ABC WEDNESDAY "LETTER Q "

Today is ABC Wednesday and our letter is Q. Q stands for QUARRY. Many miles within the towns of Roseville, Rocklin, Penryn and Lincoln are filled with Granite and even gold veins. This Quarry is located in the my hometown of Rocklin. It became a major supplier of granite for many of California's buildings, including the State Capitol in Sacramento. Its history dates back to the late 1800's. The Mining Company ,which can be seen in the background , had a big business in making cemetery monuments and markers. Great sheets or slabs were mined from the solid walls and hauled up by pulley to the mining company work area.
You really need to enlarge this to see the detail. You will be able to see the cuts in the granite and some of the pulley cables on the side of the rock. There is a pool of water running through the ravine.
Be sure to go to Mrs. Nesbitts blog. You can find it on my sidebar favorites. It will be fun to see what others have chosen for the letter Q.

Fascinating. I did some research on building with stone last fall and was very impressed with stone structures. This is an interesting 'Q' post.

My Dad was a rockhound and we owned a couple rock quarries for marble and slate so I really enjoyed reading about this one too.

I like your quarry......
Mine seems so unoriginal.

That is a fabulous picture! I love quarries - even though I sort of hate the scar they are in the earth. When we went to Italy, we saw the quarry where Michangelo got his marble to carve many of his masterpieces. The deep water in the bottom of some quarries is scary.

They make a mess of the landscape but the granite is wonderful - I especially like it on bench tops.

I thought about Q for Quarry but I actually wrote about the old quarries in my ABC B post so today I've gone with a couple of Queens (or is it seven?)

I love that photo. In the small size I found it hard to tell the scale, but when I blew it up - WOW! The detail is incredible!

Quarries are really interesting places. The captured water is often so clear. We have quarries on local islands such as Texada that provided granite and other stones for the magnificent buildings in Victoria.

I chose to use nearby Quadra Island for Q. It is a fun vacation destination that you can see by clicking here. – Margy

I never knew these quarries existed in the Sacramento area. Like you said, you can learn quite a lof of my A-B-C's on Wednesdays.

This is really interesting, what you show and write here. Especially since I've worked the past 3 weeks excavating a quarry in Jerusalem probably from Byzantine times. I guess people will always need and love stone.
