CAUTION SPEED ZONE

These are the famous Red Rock Wild Burros that I saw on our trip to Las Vegas. They were on State Route 159 in the Red Rock Canyon national Conservation Area.
In the past, visitors have fed and tried to pet these animals which caused burros to lose their fear of roads and cars. As a result, both burros and humans died in automobile collisions due to this adaptation. The Nevada political powers initiated a request for a fence to be built along State Route 159 to protect burros and other wildlife and drivers in the area. With the fence nearing compeition and protection in place, the population of the Wild Burros has grown from 29 to about 185. Excess burros will be gathered and placed in the adoption program in fiscal year 2007.

A few burros have discovered how to get through the fence and have gotten on the roadway.
As you can see, these two seem to be cautious about crossing the road.
We waited and gave them plenty of space and time.
Roadrunners and Wild Burros...it doesn't get any better for the adventure in me. Posted by Picasa

A perfect example of an "f8 and be there" photo opportunity. You were in the right place at the right time with your camera ready, and caught an interesting and funny photo!

It seems that they have been taught to look both ways before crossing the street :)

Aren't they fine creatures? I'm so relieved that they were standing by the side of the road rather than walking across it - and that you were taking it easy and watching out for them.
